Pirate attacks worldwide surged 19 percent in the past three months compared to the January-March period, largely due to increased incidents in Somalia and Nigeria, an international maritime agency said Friday.
Jack Sparrow.....
The frightening part is, there are quite a few people who call for budget cuts to the Navy (and to the submarine service in particular) not knowing that submarines have been used as one of the more effective means of dealing with pirates. It's usually very difficult to get SEAL or Marine Recon teams delivered on point in a stealthy manner to take these ships back; Helicopters broadcast quite a bit of noise on their way in, as do speedboats.
Submarines, on the other hand, are a silent and can remain hidden beneath the surface. They have a wonderful feature on them called an escape trunk (one forward, one aft) that can be used to deploy divers from beneath the water. Once the team is fully deployed, the sub can then hang back at PD (periscope depth) and monitor the action on board, and to provide other "close support" functions such as medical service command and control of other units, etc.
