advertisement

Where once the region was content to spend its petrodollars on food sold on the open market, Gulf nations now are quietly scouring the globe for rich farmland to rent or buy outright.

Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

Since we (the US) are good food producers maybe we should make some deals. Tie the cost of the food to the cost of oil and we would have a good deal. Oil goes up, food for the oil producing countries goes up, oil goes down and food goes down. A win-win for everyone.

To heck with them i say if they want to screw everyone around the world by squeezing us with oil pricing and cutting production. Why should other countries and us the US help them out with food at a time they are making record amounts of money. If they can build malls with ski resorts in them, build man made islands, and huge skyscrapers why can't they use those Billions of dollars they have sucked from the world to build huge greenhouses in the desert and grow there own food

Said it before, will say it again:  The United States needs to become the OPEC of food production.  Let's stop wasting our farmland on suburban sprawl and reinvent our agricultural economy.
