advertisement

Federal immigration officials let thousands of inmates in the nation's third-most populous county walk out of jail despite the suspects admitting they were in the U.S. illegally.

This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

I guess the Federal workers couldn't be bothered to do the paperwork.

No need to fund that program since they don't bothering to do their job anyway.

We should just put the money into reinforcing the border.

What the Hell is wrong with our immigration enforcement agencies? Illegal immigrants are caught and then either let go or put in jail. The ones that are let go are instructed to appear at an immigration hearing and then vanish and are never seen again. The ones jailed are later released and told to appear at an immigration hearing and then vanish and are never seen again.

Two things need to change in this country. Number one, illegal immigrants who are caught need to be incarcerated until they can be deported back to their country of origin. The costs of deportations should be deducted from any aid given to these countries or a lien put against any financial deposits these countries have in America. Number two, the federal law that allows a child born of immigrants illegally in this country to be considered an American citizen needs to be abolished. A new federal law needs to be written, stating that only a child of legal residents shall be considered an American citizen and all other children will not have access to any state or federal aid in any form, including schooling.

This country needs to get on the ball. The United States needs to require and issue national identity cards to all legal American citizens and legal permanent residents, these cards being required to be carried at all times. If you can't produce the card you go to jail until you can produce it. The majority of countries in this world don't have this illegal immigration problem. They don't allow it to occur in the first place and if it does occur the offenders are deported immediately.

Immigrate to this country legally and integrate yourself into our society, including learning our language and I will welcome you with open arms. Immigrate illegally and I have no sympathy for you and you should leave. You are bleeding this country dry. You are receiving services you are not entitled to, you are not paying taxes or contributions toward Social Security, you are taking jobs away from the Americans who need them and you are lowering the wage scales for working Americans.

Conservative Democrat -- actually, lawful permanent residents are already required to carry their "green card" on their person at all times, and can be held until their green card is produced. They are also currently required to inform the INS every time they change residences, and can be incarcerated and possibly deported if they fail to do so. They are barred from using many types of public aid, too, lest they be found to be a "public charge" and their lawful permanent resident status taken away.

It's a good idea, I guess, to have such identification for citizens, except illegal immigrants would find a way to obtain that identification illegally, or live under the radar, as they do now. It would be much more effective to crack down on businesses that employ undocumented individuals, and people who provide housing to undocumented individuals, rather than to require yet another piece of identification to be carried on people here legally, whether citizens or lawful residents.

Can you imagine the cost, time, and effort that would go into providing every single citizen, new and old, with such identification? Where would that money come from? People would be expected to pay for their citizenship, whether or not they were born in this country, either through application and processing fees, or through increased taxes. Nobody would like either of those options. American born citizens don't seem to realize the cost of becoming a lawful permanent resident, or the cost and requirements for becoming naturalized in this country. I doubt very much that they would like that to be required of them, since they were born here and are afforded the rights of citizens from the day of their birth.

Randy, we don't want to be paying thousands of dollars a year to feed and support an illegal in prison until his country sends money to get him back, because his country mwill NEVER send the money.  If their country wanted them that badly, they wouldn't be so damned anxious to leave it and come here.  Instead, fine the company that hired them and make that company also pay all expenses of deportation, including his meals, court fees for the deport hearings, electricity and heat in the holding cell, salaries of guards and gasoline to drive (or fly) him to the border.  Companies will only stop hiring illegals when the costs of being caught employing them is greater than the money they can save by doing so.

A discrace. Immigration has been lost for twenty years and ruined by all presidents/Dems and republications.. Should fire all concerned from the top down which is impossible. Ever try to fire a public employee? Forget about it. Nothing changes. Just another problem for poor President Obama.

Thats ok, once Obama is in he will make them all legal and the goverment won't have to waste taxpayers money on sending them back home.  And after that they are going to send for their brothers, sisters, parents and grandparents.  People are you prepared?  Poor Obama my azz... he isn't president yet butch.  He is called the president elect.  Even if you want it the other way.  Obama can kiss my behind.  I can say that because right now we live in a free world.  Once Obama gets in that will be history.

Why can't we deport 100% of those incarcerated on other crimes? These represent the most necessary as well as the easiest group to eject. They are already detained, should already have gone through deportation hearing while in jail and should be in little cages and shackles heading to their homelands.

Where I can appreciate Harris County is not the only jurisdiction within the region, as there are 7? other counties and many city forces, they need to have an organizational mechanism to account for and deport those that City and County law enforcement detain. Then again I wouldn't discount that this occurs in Harris County jurisdiction. They are not the best or most proactive agency in the region themselves.

Failure to enforce existing laws by people hired to enforce those laws would in the private sector result in termination.  What the hell is wrong with our government.  I can't blame the fed on the street as this is a systemic problem created by management.  The head of the INS should roll.  The middle managers who have created this policy and formed it into a way to avoid doing the hard work should be reviewed and their jobs given to new people who feel that enforcing law should take precedent over doing what is easiest.  THIS IS SIMPLY WRONG!  FIx it Mr. Obama!

I find it odd that INS can decide which laws they want to enforce. Like many others have said it is their job to enforce the law.

In some situations I can understand. To add to the above comments...For a very long time Houston (City) was a sanctuary city. The City Police were prohibited from asking complainants or detainees their immigration status. It took a very long time to get the City to actually change their policy. I am not sure how that worked with the county. It is possible that County officials are releasing before notifying ICE or releasing without giving ICE the time and date of release. Harris County Sheriffs Department seems a bit lax in doing their job regardless of the crime in question. They are lousy about identity theft.

That is because some officers have been reprimanded or fired for asking the status of illegals in Harris County.  I don't understand how they can go to school.  Every year when I have to fill out the ream of paper the school district sends home they request documents that prove you are here legally.  How is it that these people are getting away with this or am I just a moron for filling out all the information?  I was rear ended in my car and the illegal that hit me didn't have insurance, when the cop showed up I was told I could take it to court if I wanted to but it probably wouldn't do much good.

Illegal immigrants are turned loose from nearly every jail in the country every day. In Lee County, Florida alone, 50 - 100 are released on bail every day. Walking across the border and entering our country without permission does not make someone a bad person. Some of the hardest working, kindest people in the world do this every day, HOWEVER, the world is not a kind and innocent place and drug runners and terrorists DO cross our borders illegally every day. I know 1000's of illegal immigrants who are here only to work and make a living but it has now become the time to send everyone home and implement a guest worker program so that we can monitor all foreign visitors in or country. Border security has become a priority. Hopefully our federal government will actually do something now.

I say yet again -- illegal is ILLEGAL!  End of discussion; once arrested put them on the bus and send them back to where they came from!  If they created children while they were here, let them take their families with them.  They have no right to come here and "create" an American family.

All this secure our borders, give up liberties in the name of security is just a bunch of bs. If people don't do thier job, we won't be secure. Immigration is just a lure used by republicans to fire up their base, If alquaida wanted to send a cell of terrorists through mexico they could, if they wanted to send them through canada they could, if they wanted to send them through cuba they could, if they wanted to take their chances and send a nuke through the unchecked shipments at our ports they could. We're never gonna be completely safe, we're just giving up liberties so the republicans can spy on us.

Now here's a though.  We clear out our overcrowded prisons by figuring out which prisoners are illegals, ship them all back where they came from, and take the costs out of the aid we send to that country.  No matter how many people try to say the US is greedy and doesn't contribute enough, we sure as hell pour money into enough third-world hellholes, all of which ends up lining the pockets of El Presidente-for-Life or whatever the local corrupt dictator calls himself.  Or better yet, just stop ALL our foreign aid to these rats and spend the money here in America.  There are hungry children sleeping on the streets tonight in every city in this country, and I say care for them before spending a penny of American money helping people elsewhere.

When is enough, enough??? When are we going to start putting people in power that deal with this festering problem??? This isn't going to get any better under Obama!!! I am not trying to get into a political debate, but if you listened to the candidates speak you would know this is only going to get worse. I am not backing McCain either...he was only marginally better, but at least he was not going to give tax money to illegals, give them driver's licenses and put then on their way to becoming US citizens!!! All for doing nothing more than breaking our laws and coming to this country illegally during a time when American politicians are content to ignore the problems of our national security at the expense of accumulating the Hispanic vote.

Again, I am not taking sides here, Republican or Democrat it does not matter...both parties are to blame here. The Bush Administration as well as the Democrat and Republican Congress has been weak when dealing with illegals as evidenced by this article...but as I said...it isn't going to get any better under the new administration!

When are we as a nation going to hold our public officials accountable for their actions or lack there of??? This nation needs to wake up and see the big picture.  Our country's security is at risk!

This puts me in mind of all those people that go on and on about how Bush has prevented any more terrorist attacks in the U.S.

If a bunch of poor Mexicans can get past the border.. is there anyone that thinks Al Qaeda can't?   It's a damn joke.

Nothing funny about it.  They could be your neighbors, just patiently waiting.

Immigration will always say they don't have enough money to deport, but we ALWAYS have enough money to imprison. What's wrong with this picuture?  Please don't just complain here, so as I do, and WRITE YOUR LAWMAKERS.  Thanks
